Are You Investing in Yourself?

When was the last time you took some time off to learn something new or to recharge? If you’re an entrepreneur or creative type who is self-employed, stepping away from your work may not be a regular occurrence. If you want to get unstuck or move forward, it should be.

Taking advantage of opportunities

There are many great opportunities available that can help you:

1) Move your business or career forward
2) Teach you something new
3) Help you relax, unwind, and gain clarity

I am very selective when it comes to workshops, seminars, and training. As I’ve unfortunately learned, not all of them provide good value or are a good fit. Sometimes, stepping outside of your comfort zone can pay off, however, so keep that in mind as well. Often, you need to go to grow.

Me & Bashiri JohnsonGaining experience – and clarity

It helps to set some intentions of what you hope to get out of the experience before you leave. Gaining experience, contacts, and clarity were my intentions for the Asheville Percussion Festival, which I attended this past weekend. While I did learn some advanced drumming techniques, I also gained a lot of clarity and confirmation from one of the speakers, famous percussionist Bashiri Johnson. Bashiri has played with Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Bob Dylan, Madonna, Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Luther Vandross, Steve Winwood, and many others.

Do you know what helped him hone his skills the most? It was what he learned from private teachers and mentors. It was the choice to invest in himself and his career that helped him vault ahead of the crowd. He also has great drumming instincts and a very positive attitude!

Further clarity was obtained at the end of the festival when I discovered that I have a skill that apparently few have heard of and could be in big demand: drum healing. So, don’t assume that everyone else is an expert. Everyone is an expert in something or does something really well. Trust your instincts and fuel your passion!

Be open

If you attend a weekend or week-long workshop or retreat, you may learn plenty during the classes or sessions. Often, the “Aha” moments come from something unexpected. It could’ve been from a breakout session you attended by mistake, from a casual comment, or from someone you happened to meet.

The trick is to keep your eyes and ears open and to clear your mind from clutter and distractions. Relax, pay attention, and have fun!
