You Can Start a Business at Any Age!

Hispanic woman in home office

Do you think you’re too young or too old to start a business? Think again! The truth is, you can start a business or launch a new career at any age.

There are many myths surrounding entrepreneurship. One is that you need a ton of money or a small business loan. This is my third business. I started all three on a shoestring. In fact, I started Rock the Next Stage with only $40. No loans, no fat back account, no corporate buy-out package. $40 got me three domain names, a free website, and card stock for some DIY business cards until I had enough money to upgrade.

My entertainment and booking business, Next Stage Entertainment, never even had a website. It was all word-of-mouth. I had the bands and the skills and people found me (or I found them). Except for the performances, everything was done online. I still book bands and solo artists on occasion.

Age is relative

Ageism is alive and well, especially when it comes to the job market. It’s funny how many people made assumptions about me when I tried to re-enter the workforce at age 50. They assumed that older people are slow (physically and mentally), don’t know anything about social media, and don’t have any computer skills. Too bad none of that applies to me.

Last week, I attended an expo targeting adults who are 50+. Once again, I was amused by the types of products and services that were being offered and the assumptions that were being made. I did this video as a rebuttal and included four tips to help you brainstorm your new business or career. Take a peek:
