Moving Forward: What to Do If You’ve Hit a Wall

frustrated woman banging head against wall of office buildingHave you even been zipping along with your business, job search, or career then Wham! You’ve hit a wall!

When my book hit #1 on Kindle, I foolishly thought that speaking gigs would just jump into my lap. Just like some of the bands I book, getting recognition as a writer and speaker is a bit harder when you’re going the Indie route.

If you’re feeling stuck, you may need to take a step back. You may need to reassess your priorities, your focus, and your methods. If what you’re doing isn’t working, you need to stop banging your head against the wall and try something new.

Think of a camera lens. You can adjust the focus and zoom or pan out. Whether I’m booking bands for shows or booking myself for drumming or speaking gigs, I have to zoom in on what makes me or my bands stand out and then I pan back to see things from the organizers’ perspective.

The venue owner or event organizer (or future client or boss) is mainly concerned with three things:

1) What can you do for him or her? What’s their #1 priority? Hint: It’s usually about boosting sales or income.
2) Do you have a proven track record? Have you done this before? Where and for whom?
3) Are you professional and easy to work with? This is evident in what materials you have available and how you respond to calls and emails. No one likes a slacker – or a diva!

If you can’t get your foot in the door, you have another option. It’s riskier and takes planning and contacts. You create your own event (or business).

As I looked at my journal entries from a year ago (before I had written my book), this was actually my game plan. I know how to secure a venue and plan and organize events. I’ve done it hundreds of times. It just wasn’t the preferred open. Until now.
