Still Waiting for Your Pot of Gold?

They say good things come to those who wait. However, if you’re trying to get your business or career off the ground, waiting can be extremely frustrating! When you see others getting those big gigs and opportunities, you may wonder: Is it luck, leprechauns, or something else?

Well, as I mentioned in my recent podcast, sometimes it’s a timing thing. They may have been in the right place at the right time. Keep in mind, they had to do something first to put things into play. That could’ve been just speaking up, giving someone their card, making a phone call, or connecting with the right person. You have to initiate action to garner interest.

Keep looking for the rainbow!

In my experience in the music, speaking, and coaching worlds, I’ve learned that “No” doesn’t always mean “No.” If often means, “Not now.” Sometimes, the event is full or the client isn’t ready.

It’s not unusual for me to get onto the roster of an event the following year. I’ve also had potential coaching clients contact me months or even years later. I don’t always wait for things to magically appear, however. I follow up. Often the person who inquired is the one who gets hired.

I can’t promise you a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow but these tips should help:

1) Check in with people to see if they need your services. You might reach them at just the right time. Don’t be pushy! It should be casual and come from the heart, not desperation.

2) Be clear! Tell them what makes you stand out and what they can expect. Don’t oversell or stretch the truth.

3) Don’t lowball yourself! Don’t throw out a low price just to get the client or the gig! Wait, listen, and then respond with your offer.

4) It’s not a good fit, it’s ok to pass. It may not be the right opportunity for you but a good fit for someone else. Pass a few coins to someone else – share a referral or politely decline.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!
