The Sound of Possibilities

Do you hear that? No, not Christmas tunes. It’s the sound of possibilities. Now, some people are stressed out about the holidays, their finances, or the political climate. They can only hear doom and gloom and don’t believe things will get better. Maybe you’ve had a rough year and you believe this, too.

What you’re hearing depends on what frequency you’re tuned into. It also depends on what you’re trained to hear. For example, when I first started playing percussion in our rockin’ church band, I had no formal training and I hadn’t played with anyone else. Suddenly, I was able to hear every single percussion instrument in every tune that came on the radio. I never noticed them before!

Eventually, I overcame my fear of messing up. My skills improved, along with my confidence. If there was a tune with a complicated percussion part, I listened to it over and over again until the beats became ingrained in my head. I was no longer thinking and obsessing but FEELING. As a result, my mindset and my abilities shifted.

Now, my instincts are so fine-tuned that I can jump in and play just about any tune, even if I’ve never heard it before. I now also play with others. The photo above is one of the percussion set-ups I’ve used (You can’t see the blocks, cowbells, or the timbale drums. Think “Sheila E.”).
