Feeling Stuck? Crank it Up!

Ever feel totally frustrated or stuck in your business, career, or life? It’s easy to be tooling along and then “Wham!” You hit a brick wall.

Last month I experienced an unusual phenomenon which I will call the “disappearing gig syndrome.” I had tons of drumming events booked for April and then – poof! They were all gone. This never happened when I was booking bands so I was stunned when it happened to me.

Things like this sometimes happen due to outside forces. Companies and organizations cut back, lay people off, or restructure. This can affect you directly if you’re employed by those companies or indirectly, if you’re providing services to those companies or organizations.

Other times, it could be either something you’re doing – or not doing. Success often boils down to:

1) Clarity: Being really clear about who you are and what you offer
2) Confidence: Accepting your gifts and owning them
3) Commitment: Doing what it takes, being “all in”
4) Communication: Clear and consistent messaging and marketing and good follow-up
5) Clearing the clutter: Clearing mental and physical clutter opens things up.

Time to crank it up to 11!

When it seems like something’s just not clicking and my rhythm seems off, I take time to regroup. I revisit my “Why” and remember that I’m not just a “Drum Chick.” I have a story to share and coaching techniques that get people unstuck – fast!

Whenever I feel totally stuck, I take a look at the five areas above. I get really honest with myself and make adjustments. Then, I do something counter-intuitive: I make an investment in my business. Instead of curling up into a ball and retreating, I crank it up to 11! If you’re not familiar with this term, it’s from the 80’s movie Spinal Tap.

I don’t do this on a whim. It’s something that I’ve researched and given a whole lot of thought and prayer. I take a deep breath – and crank it up. And new opportunities (and teachers) appear.

It’s always the right thing or the right person at the right time (Yes, even coaches need coaches!). Maybe it’s a way that God or the Universe tests you. It’s easy to say you want to move forward. But you have to prove you’re ready. Once you’re ready, your confidence soars! You may be a little scared but if you want something, you need to take a deep breath, plug in that amp, and crank it up!

Tune in next week to see the two big things I decided to try. Hint: One is business-related and the other is fun.
