Express Yourself! 3 Tips to Help You Find Your Voice

Singer_chickIs your message coming through in your speaking, writing, and marketing? Is the real you evident or invisible? Or are you holding back, staying quiet, or copying others to be more accepted?

When I first began doing guest speaking and emceeing concerts, no one taught me how to use the microphone. Yes, I had singing lessons but I didn’t know how far away I should hold the mic, if my voice was being heard, and how to avoid feedback. Through trial and error, I figured things out.

The same applied to what I spoke about, what jokes I used, and what I wore. I needed to decide what I wanted to be known for. Soon, my style began to develop and I began coaching others.

New speakers and singers often have difficulty expressing themselves effectively. It’s not only evident in their lack of projection and enunciation but also in the content or lyrics they are delivering. Entrepreneurs and writers can have these problems as well. It all boils down to believability and being authentic.

– Are you being yourself at meetings, with clients, on camera, or on stage?
– Do your website, social media accounts, and printed materials reflect the real you?
– Is your voice clear and do you speak with authority and conviction?
– Do you know what you stand for?
– Are you using your story and your talent effectively?
– Are you dressing for the occasion or just throwing on whatever you can find?

If you’re just starting out or you’ve been thrown a curve ball, it’s hard to figure out who you are and what you offer. This is all part of personal branding. If you’re not landing the right jobs, gigs, or clients, it’s possible you have a branding problem and need to find your voice.

Here are a few tips:

1) Take some time to reflect on the things that you love to do and what you do best. What lights you up inside?
2) Rock what you’ve got! What makes you stand out from others in your industry? That’s what you should be emphasizing.
3) Take a stand! What words define you and your brand? Are these reflected in your photos, brochures, business cards, website, and social media profiles? Do you share your story so people know what you’re all about?

It’s time to crank it up to 11! Express yourself and let the real you shine through!
