Natural Rhythm: Creating a Business or Career from Your Strengths

Drum_circleEveryone has strengths and weaknesses. If you’re unhappy or frustrated in your job or business, it’s probably because you’re not using your talents and strengths. Instead, you’re getting bogged down with tasks that either are not in your skill set or that don’t light you up inside. You’re out of sync with your natural rhythm.

Gifted by Design

We are all born with at least one gift or talent. I believe it was given to us by our Creator. Sometimes, it is revealed at a very young age. Often, it is revealed much later due to the circumstances.

Unfortunately, many of us discount our gifts and talents. We don’t see them until someone else says “Hey, you’re really good at that!”

We often don’t realize how to parlay our gifts and talents into an interesting career or business, so we toil away in jobs that we really don’t like but hey, it pays the bills.  Before you know it, months and even years go by.

You become so used to not honoring your gifts, talents, and dreams and so you settle. Slowly, you slip into a life of resignation and quiet desperation. You’ve lost your joy and you don’t know how to find it. This also happens to women who gave up their careers to raise the kids.

Finding Your Rhythm

In order to get back into the groove and find what makes your heart sing, ask yourself the following questions:

–          What hobbies do you enjoy and why?

–          Do you do any volunteer work that you really love?

–          Do you have any causes that you feel passionate about?

–          If money were no object, what would you do?

Writing Your Own Song

I’ve booked and coached hundreds of local bands and solo artists over the years.  One of the biggest decisions they face is deciding whether they want to sing someone else’s tunes or write their own.

Songwriting isn’t as easy as just coming up with some lyrics. That’s a great start but there are many components to good songwriting.  The trick is learning how to combine all the different elements to create something that really works, that will sell, and that the artist feels good about.

It’s the same with a new career or a business. You may need to get creative and combine a few things.  Some people thought I was nuts combining business and success coaching with drumming but those are my two loves. They complement each other and it totally works.

I found my rhythm and wrote my own song. My joy is helping others do the same.
