How Small Business Owners Can See and Solve Their Blind Spots

Blind_spot_mirrorSmall business owners, like drivers, need to be aware that blind spots exist and that ignoring them can be dangerous.  

For example, when I used to book, manage, and coach local bands, I noticed a recurring phenomenon.  The lead singer/guitar player generally was the one who put the band together. However, he often wasn’t the best singer in the band.

The best singer was left singing back up and was barely noticeable, both live and on the CD’s. So, there was the lead singer, singing his heart out – off key! And the bands would wonder why they weren’t getting more gigs.

Tips for Biz Owners

Small business owners aren’t much different, myself included. Our business is our idea and our baby. We’re so immersed in our business that we don’t always understand what’s not working.  As I mentioned in my last post, our vision can be skewed and not entirely clear.

Here are some tips, based on common problems I’m seeing:

Tip #1:  Make sure people can find you and know who you are.  How and where you market yourself depends on your target market and where they hang out (both live and virtually).

Tip #2: Don’t just rely on your website and social media, get out there and network!  Don’t hit people over the head with a sales pitch, just talk to them. Make note of body language and what’s not working.

Tip #3:  Don’t overlook branding.  Colors, logo, slogan or tagline, website layout, and Facebook business page (aka fan page) should all mesh with who you are and what your company does or sells. The same goes for how you dress.

If your business is about jewelry, makeup or fashion, and you go to networking meetings in sweats looking like you just rolled out of bed, do you think people will be rushing over to you to find out more about your company?

Tip #4: What are you wasting time on? What’s preventing you from moving forward, getting more clients, or selling your products?

If it’s administrative tasks, hire someone or get a student intern! Ditto for social media.  However, if you find yourself making a lot of excuses, ask yourself if they’re really valid. Is this one thing (or several things) really why you’re not getting more clients? Or are you just overwhelmed and not sure what to do next?

Tip #5: Ask for an outside opinion. Don’t ask everyone you meet. Find someone who gets it, who can be honest, and who can truly help.
