Have you ever wanted to create a business based on what you love? What would your life be like?
When I was young, I wanted to dance on Broadway or be a Rockette at the Radio City Music Hall. I would often daydream in school and choreograph dance numbers in my head. When I wasn’t dancing, I was drawing or playing guitar.
You might have also found me playing teacher. I would write on a chalk board and teach lessons to my friends. I’m not sure what I taught them. I think I just liked speaking in front of a crowd.
Fast forward to today. My businesses involve coaching, teaching, guest speaking, and music.
What were your favorite things to do as a kid? Do you see an underlying theme?
Getting Out of Your Own Way
You may be thinking that what you liked to do as a kid or what you want to do now isn’t realistic. That’s probably because you’re making things harder than they need to be. You’ve convinced yourself that you can’t do it, it’s not practical, the time isn’t right, or you don’t have the money, or you can’t afford to take the risk.
So let me ask you a few questions: Are you happy? Are you where you want to be at this point in your life? Is this what you imagined yourself doing? Are you having fun?
If the answer to any of those questions is “no”, then you might want to start thinking of what your life could be like, if only you gave yourself permission. Sometimes you just need to get out of your own way.
Overcoming Stage Fright
I’ve worked with hundreds of bands and solo artists in my other company, Next Stage Entertainment. I also play percussion in a band. Stage fright is very common, even among those who are experienced.
At some point, however, you need to just feel the fear and do it anyway. If you don’t, you’ll always be stuck just hanging out backstage. No one will ever hear your music or what you have to say. Instead of sharing your God-given talents, they will just remain dormant. What a waste!
My job is to encourage people to step into the spotlight and let their gifts and talents shine. If not now, when? How much longer are you going to wait? What can you do now to move yourself closer to your dream? Set a couple of goals – and then get started!
