Did you know that anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in the U.S., affecting 40 million adults in the United States age 18 and older? That’s a lot of worrying! That’s also a lot of lost sleep!
Worrying can be a problem when it becomes a conditioned response. It is also a huge stumbling block to success and a colossal waste of time. Nothing has ever been changed by worrying.
People who worry a lot generally aren’t taking time to have fun! Their brains tend to recycle the same concerns over and over again and they feel stuck. So, what can you instead of worrying? Here are some more positive ways to release stress and anxiety:
1) Go outside. Take a walk. Enjoy nature. Decompress.
2) Try deep breathing, using slow deep breaths.
3) Try to quiet your brain for a few minutes. Meditate, pray, or listen to music.
4) Get physical! Go for a run, a swim, bike, hike, or whatever gets your blood pumping.
5) If you’re more into low impact, try yoga or martial arts.
6) Play with your kids or your pets.
7) Pound on some clay or a punching bag.
8) Be a kid for a few minutes. Blow bubbles, draw, or mess with some paints.
10) Play an instrument. I prefer drums but whatever works for you.
In terms of work and career stress, set some boundaries. Shut off your cell phone at night and don’t check your work email. If there is talk of a layoff, update your resume and LinkedIn profile. Always have a Plan B. This applies to entrepreneurs as well.
If you’ve been through some tough stuff, I totally get it. I’ve been there as well. It’s tough to understand why things happen when you’re right in the middle of it. That’s why it helps to talk to someone who has been there and came out the other side. They will have insight that you don’t. They can use their experience to help others. One day, you will too.
